Natalie Cole Raises Awareness Of Hepatitis C

Natalie Cole is adding her voice to healthcare company Merck’s public health campaign, Tune In to Hep C, with the American Liver Foundation (ALF) and rock legend Gregg Allman.

The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness of chronic hepatitis C virus infection. Cole will join Allman onstage at a benefit concert featuring The Allman Brothers Band and other special guests in New York tonight, July 27, the eve of World Hepatitis Day.

This cause is personal to Cole, who was diagnosed with chronic hepatitis C during a routine blood test in 2008. It was then that she realized she’d been living with the virus for more than 25 years – nearly half of her life. Cole’s experience is not uncommon. In fact, chronic hepatitis C is often referred to as the silent disease because – for many people – it can be in the body for decades without any symptoms. Cole is joining the campaign to encourage others with chronic hepatitis C to put aside fear and stigma and take action.

“One thing is for sure – there’s a stigma surrounding hepatitis C because it’s associated with IV drug use. But it really doesn’t matter how you got the virus. What’s important is that you do something about it,” said Cole. “I am grateful that Merck and the American Liver Foundation created this campaign to give a voice to those with chronic hepatitis C, and I hope that my story can help others overcome their fears about taking that next step by talking to their doctor about their options.”

Approximately 3.2 million Americans have chronic hepatitis C virus infection, a potentially serious disease that can damage the liver over time and lead to cirrhosis, end-stage liver disease and liver cancer. Many people infected with chronic hepatitis C do not know that they have the virus – approximately 70 to 80 percent of people newly infected with the virus do not have symptoms.

“It’s great to have Natalie on board to help spread the message that chronic hepatitis C is not something you can ignore,” Allman said. “Together, we’ll be working to fight the stigma that can keep people from addressing this disease. I know all too well that doing nothing is not an option. That’s why we’re telling people, talk to your doctor.”

The American Liver Foundation joined the Tune In to Hep C campaign to help elevate awareness of this important public health issue. ALF is a national organization advocating for those living with liver disease and their families, and provides education, support and research for the prevention, treatment and cure of liver disease.

“Since we launched this campaign a month ago, we’ve been inundated with messages from people with chronic hepatitis C and their loved ones who all say the same thing – ‘I never thought we’d see the day where there would be a voice and a face to this disease. It’s about time,’” said Newton Guerin, acting CEO and chief operating officer, ALF. “By sharing their stories, Gregg and Natalie are sending a powerful message to those who feel alone and afraid to come forward as well as anyone who is hesitant to take action.”

More information about the campaign as well as Allman’s and Cole’s stories are available on www.TuneInToHepC.com, which launched today. The website also offers a first glimpse at Allman’s new television public service announcement, which is slated to hit the airwaves in the coming weeks.

“It is our hope that this campaign, and Gregg’s and Natalie’s inspirational stories, will serve as a spark to encourage dialogue about chronic hepatitis C among communities, families and friends, as well as between physicians and their patients,” said Mark Timney, president, Global Human Health – U.S. Market, Merck. “From the feedback we’ve received so far, we believe the campaign is already making a difference, and we look forward to continuing to reach others with chronic hepatitis C, and, hopefully, motivating them to take action.”

The concert, Tune In to Hep C Presents The Allman Brothers Band, will take place at The Beacon Theatre in New York City tonight, July 27, the eve of World Hepatitis Day. Allman and Cole will both perform at the concert, along with The Allman Brothers Band and other special guests. Proceeds from the benefit concert will be donated to the American Liver Foundation and to the National Viral Hepatitis Roundtable, a coalition of public, private and voluntary organizations dedicated to reducing the incidence of infection, morbidity and mortality from viral hepatitis in the United States.

Bikini Mama Adriana Lima's Miami Beach Family Playdate

Making the most of the NBA offseason, Adriana Lima and her NBA player husband Marko Jaric hit the beach with their daughter Valentina in Miami, FL on Sunday (July 31).

The Victoria's Secret stunner looked in tip-top shape as she sported a skimpy leopard print bikini during the Sunshine State family shoreline romp.

Making for an adorable sight to be seen, Marko dotingly played with little Valentina throughout the day's outing - even giving his baby girl a playful toss in the air while the whole family took a dip in the Atlantic Ocean.

The sighting comes as Miss Lima is in the midst of her North American travels for Victoria's Secret, during which she's been making appearances at VS stores to promote the brand's latest lingerie and beachwear offerings.

TCA: Kelsey Grammer On His Dramatic Transformation In Starz's 'Boss'

Nellie AndreevaKelsey Grammer is taking a dark turn in his first drama series, Starz's upcoming Boss, in which he stars as the ruthless mayor of Chicago who is diagnosed with a degenerative mental condition that only he and his doctor know about. The series, which premieres Oct. 21, marks Grammer's return to television after a 2-year break. ?I took a break for a while, and there were a lot of reasons I did,? he said. ?I decided I needed to make a life change." As for the genre change from comedy to drama, it may have something to do with his experience on his most recent half-hour series, the short-lived ABC sitcom Hank. ?Nobody really liked that,? Grammer said. ?It wasn?t really funny.? Grammer even called Warner Bros. TV president Peter Roth. "I asked, ?How do we put a bullet in this thing??? The experience has been completely different on Boss. ?It?s been probably the greatest time of my life, creatively," Grammer said. "I have said some of the most extraordinary language I?ve said in my life doing this role.? Here is a trailer for the series, written by Farhad Safinia and directed by Gus Van Sant:

Rare Lord Of The Rings Collectibles Go Under The Hammer For Charity

Today is your last chance to bid on a selection of rare Lord of the Rings and other film collectibles to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

California-based company Sideshow Collectibles has announced a plan to increase its yearly donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation with the help of fans and collectors. In the past, the company donated the $5,000 sum needed to fulfill one child’s wish, but Sideshow’s goal for 2011 is to raise over $25,000, enough to support at least five wishes, by sponsoring a ‘Collect For Life’ Auction with 100% of proceeds going to Make-A-Wish Foundation of Orange County and the Inland Empire.

Going under the hammer are a series of rare artist proof miniatures, as well as a polystone statue of LOTR’s Legolas signed by Orlando Bloom. Also in the auction is a James Bond miniature signed by actor Richard Kiel, an Alien Vs Predator tile signed by Lance Henriksen and a life-size Hellboy prop signed by Ron Perlman.

As a firm supporter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s mission, Sideshow Collectibles President Greg Anzalone states, “We believe in the work that Make-A-Wish is doing, and we’re proud to support them. The wishes that they grant are much more than just a fun couple of days to these kids and their families. Wishes allow these kids to set aside their struggle and live their dreams for a day ? many times when days are limited.”

The auction can be accessed here, but be quick, it ends today.

The Real Housewives of New York City: Too Much Drama? New Cast on the Way?

The Real Housewives of New York City just wrapped up yet another dramatic season. But might it have been a tad TOO dramatic?

Insiders say the life on set reached a new low this year, from insulting Tweets to Moroccan brawls to incidents not seen on camera.

“Things have gotten so bad that producers are worried that this cast can no longer film together,” a source says“All the ladies have long memories and will not let the smallest thing go. The level of hatred at the moment is so high that it's toxic and all consuming... it’s just petty and sad.”

All The Real Housewives of New York City

One particular source of contention?

A blogger has been bashing the heck out of Jill Zarin, but multiple co-stars have actually befriended this individual, creating serious tension, a friend of Jill's tells The Huffington Post:

“This sort of behavior should be rejected by all the cast members, no matter how hot disagreements get on the show. It has stopped being a TV fight and is now a real life battle that is unacceptable.”

Might it lead to significant cast upheaval? We'll keep you informed.

Hollywood celebrities and residents will walk around the clock this Saturday, July 30, to battle cancer at the American Cancer Society's second annual Relay For Life of Hollywood.

At sundown the Luminaria Ceremony honors and memorializes those who are still fighting cancer or have list their battle with decorated luminaria bags illuminating track into the night, lighting a path of hope. The event closes the next morning with the upbeat Fight Back Ceremony, reminding us that we have the power to change the course of this disease.

In 2010, more than three million walkers, including more than 600,000 cancer survivors, participated in 5,150 Relay events nationwide and in 19 other countries. In California alone, the Relay raised nearly $26,401 million raised for cancer research, education, services and advocacy.

Demi Lovato To Perform At Do Something Charity Awards

DoSomething.org and VH1 have announced that Demi Lovato, Foster the People and OneRepublic with B.o.B will perform as part of the celebrity charity 2011 Do Something Awards.

Hosted by Glee star Jane Lynch, the ceremony will honor and celebrate the nation’s best young world-changers who represent the pivotal “do-ers” in their field, cause or issue. Celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Prince William and Duchess Catherine, David Beckham, Scarlett Johansson, Russell Brand and Will Ferrell have been nominated in a variety of categories from ‘Do Something Movie Star’ to ‘Do Something Couple’ for all they have done to inspire young people. Many will be on hand to accept and present the awards at the show which will air Thursday, August 18, 2011 at 9:00pm EST on VH1.

The show will mark the first time Demi Lovato will perform her hit single “Skyscraper” live. Her fans played a big part in making this performance happen by enthusiastically tweeting the word “Skyscraper” to @DoSomething multiple times over the last month. Lovato is also nominated for two awards in the Do Something Charity Song and Do Something TV Star categories.

“If you are expecting anything less than ‘wow,’ you’ve got the wrong award show. We are so psyched to have Demi’s first public performance, a hot break-out band like Foster the People, and expect OneRepublic with B.o.B to be very loud!” said Nancy Lublin, CEO and Chief Old Person of DoSomething.org.

“This year’s show will feature some of the hottest musicians performing the summers’ biggest hits in celebration of these amazing young people’s accomplishments.” added Tom Calderone, President, VH1.

In addition to honoring celebrities for their work to inspire others, and a night filled with great musical performances, one young “do-er” (age 25 and under) will receive a grand prize of $100,000 for their cause. This is the largest and most prestigious prize in the world for young people and social change.

The five nominees this year have all gone above and beyond to make a difference in their communities and will be rewarded with a community grant and continued support from DoSomething.org. Nominees include Taryn Guerrero Davis for The American Widow Project, David Schwartz for The Real Food Challenge, Sarah Cronk for The Sparkle Effect, Mark Kabban for YALLA (Youth And Leaders Living Actively) and Adam Lowy for Move for Hunger.

Since 2007, the Do Something Awards have continued their mission of inspiring, supporting and celebrating a generation of doers. Last year marked the first time the show aired live from Los Angeles on VH1 (it was previously featured in the 2008-2009 Teen Choice Awards). Hosted by Glee’s Jane Lynch, the 2010 Do Something Awards featured performances by Travie McCoy & Bruno Mars, Lifehouse, Natasha Bedingfield, and Jane herself. In addition to the signature Do Something Award, the show honored celebrities like the Jonas Brothers, Kathy Griffin, Kellan Lutz, and Snoop Dogg for their dedication to doing good. Megan Fox participated in the show by introducing one of the five ‘Do Something Award’ nominees.
