Celebrities To Take Part In Charity Relay For Life

Hollywood celebrities and residents will walk around the clock this Saturday, July 30, to battle cancer at the American Cancer Society's second annual Relay For Life of Hollywood.

Local elected officials will be present at this life-changing event to raise funds to support free services for local cancer patients and their families. Funds also support the Society’s critical cancer research, community early detection and prevention education programs and advocacy efforts.

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is a life-changing, family-oriented community event that celebrates the lives of those who have battled cancer, remembers loved ones lost, and empowers individuals and communities to fight back against a disease that affects so many.

Armed with tents and sleeping bags, team members will gather at Helen Bernstein High School on Saturday, July 30, 2011 at 9:00 a.m. for an overnight campout against cancer. After soliciting pledges from friends, family, neighbors and colleagues, participants take turns walking or running around the track, join fun activities off the track, and share their experiences of courage, hope, and inspiration with each other. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events to pay homage to all the courageous people affected by cancer.

The event begins with survivors walking the Survivors Lap together in purple Relay shirts affirming the courage of those who have faced cancer and won. At sundown the Luminaria Ceremony honors and memorializes those who are still fighting cancer or have list their battle with decorated luminaria bags illuminating track into the night, lighting a path of hope. The event closes the next morning with the upbeat Fight Back Ceremony, reminding us that we have the power to change the course of this disease.

In 2010, more than three million walkers, including more than 600,000 cancer survivors, participated in 5,150 Relay events nationwide and in 19 other countries. In California alone, the Relay raised nearly $26,401 million raised for cancer research, education, services and advocacy.
